This project consists of a second story addition and associated remodeling to an existing single story designed in 1950 by Modernist architect A. Quincy Jones. Located in the Crestwood Hills of Brentwood, CA, this house was one of over 100 constructed as a part of the Mutual Housing Association development and is one of approximately three dozen surviving structures. Local design guidelines encourage the use of materials and forms consistent with the original architect’s design intent and philosophy.
This proposal elaborates on and extends the tectonic and spatial vocabulary of the existing house without resorting to stylistic mimicry. Copying the existing house would diminish the value both of the original design and the addition. This project is under development as of December 2010. Construction is currently planned for the summer of 2011.
